ELEGANT TO ECCENTRIC: Bindings from teh Main ROom of the William L. Clements Library
January 8 to March 20, 2007
This exhibit features a variety of bindings selected from the cases in the Main
Room of the Clements Library. Guest curator and conservationist Julia Miller
and Clements cataloger of rare books Oksana Linda carefully chose each example
to represent the many fascinating aspects of the timeless art of book binding.
This visually stunning exhibit is designed to appeal to both the expert bibliophile
and the novice reader. Included
are "extra"' or fine bindings from Europe, blind-tooled bindings from
England, examples of 18th century leather bindings "marbled" in different
patterns, decorated paper bindings and inscribed bindings. A large section of
the exhibit is dedicated to American colonial and post-Revolutionary War bindings,
1663-1820.
