Way Out West - As the Eastern vacation destinations became crowded, the newer western railroads were quick to point out the expansive beauty of their routes. Transcontinental trains made the Colorado Rockies only three or four days travel away from the Eastern Seaboard. For the more adventurous and sporting traveler, the American west of the 19th century still had a frontier flavor.

Tourism - As the population of regular vacationers grew, an industry formed to provide enticing travel guides and literature. Advances in color printing techniques allowed for spectacular graphic design.
