C. LaTrobe,
Report on Negro Education in Jamaica, 1837

This report was produced after an inquiry in the British Parliament regarding the educational facilities, or lack of them, in the British colonies. The report grouped schools by the Christian denomination that ran them and by it location. The tabular form of the report systemitized the information, but did not necessarily convey the individual differences between different schools. The report gave information about the school size, building, costs, student origins, religious denomination, student attendance, teacher gender, and supervision.

Reading Between the Lines

Compare the amount of subsidies distributed by the government with the progress on creating schools. After thinking it through, what is your reaction?

Were black students taught the same subjects as white students? Is this kind of discrimination different in any way from the fact that rich students have always learned different subjects from penurious students?
