Hannah Foster,
The Boarding School, or Lessons of a Preceptress to her Pupils, 1798

This treatise, presented as a novel and an extended correspondence between schoolgirls, was published in New York. In it Foster outlines the qualities and subjects that a female education should polish. A sample of chapter headings is presented in this exhibit to provide a flavor of the author's style and content. Omitted from this online display are the chapters on behavior, morals and manners.
