Salmon P. Chase Letter to Norton Townshend,

February 10, 1854

Washington, Feb. 10, 1854

My dear friend,

You can hardly be aware how much the silence of our legislature at this juncture cripples and weakens me. I have just rec'd your letter saying that you expect a repeal for the Com. on Fiscal Relations next week. In Heaven's name get all the true men together and force the resolution through or compel the dastards to take the responsibility of rejection. Delay is treason now and the people will so adjudge it.

Yours ever,

S.P. Chase

Hon. N.S. Townshend
