Jessup, Andrew S. Rank: Private Regiment: 6th Michigan Cavalry Regiment. Co. D? (1862-1865) Service: 1864 January-1865 September
The letters of Andrew Jessup and his brother, Jacob, tell little about the men or their family. Andrew Jessup appears to have been drafted into the service in January, 1864, and, despite fears that he would never survive the war, he appears to have served with the regiment until it mustered out in September, 1865.
The Jessup Papers are among the slimmest collections in the library's collections, and Andrew Jessup is one of the more marginally literate writers. They are of interest primarily for two reasons. First, Jessup appears to have been a draftee, a rare commodity in the Clements' collections. Secondly, the faint outlines of Jessup's character that can be discerned are very interesting. His protestations to his mother that he will read the Bible faithfully and will avoid gambling and "bad comney" ring a little hollow when in a letter dated September, 1865, he writes of being sent out to arrest a deserter, but when he and a fellow soldier ran afoul of a constable, was himself arrested and fined $30 for assault. Once again, after asking to borrow money of his family, he promises that when he returns home, he hopes he "may live to be a blesing to my Parents instead of a cirse to them."
