Farrington, W. F. Rank: Delegate Regiment: United States Christian Commission Service: Unknown
Almost nothing is known about W. F. Farrington. His wife, Margaret, appears to be at least his third wife -- he refers to sick soldier under his care as having gone to school with his second wife -- and though he writes to his wife at an address in East Bridgewater, Mass., his letters suggest that he (or she) may have been from Maine. During the closing days of the war, Farrington worked at Sickle's Hospital in Alexandria, Va., "the City of Stinks," as he called it. As a delegate for the U.S. Christian Commission, his duties included caring for sick and wounded soldiers and distributing clothing and other goods donated by "loyal" women at home.
These four letters were all written by Farrington in Alexandria to his wife, Margaret, in East Bridgewater, Mass. They are not rich in detail, but give a brief glimpse into the activities of a Christian Commission delegate in the days following the formal end of the war, while everyone in the service were anxiously awaiting the chance to return home.
