Chapman, Lucius W. Rank: Chaplain Regiment: 110th Ohio Infantry Regiment (1862-1865) Service: 1864 March 8-April 26
A native of Piqua, Ohio, Lucius W. Chapman enlisted as chaplain to the 110th Ohio Infantry Regiment in March, 1864, but left the army within two months due to homesickness and urgent illness in his family. Most of his brief service was spent in northern Virginia, between Washington, D.C., and Culpeper County, and he had little direct experience with combat.
The Lucius Chapman diary is a closely-written account of a man's two months in the service. An educated and sensitive man, his constant themes are loneliness, the impoverished moral condition of the army, and religious services.
