Brown, Thomas Rank: Capt. Regiment: United States. Navy Service: 1863-1865
The Steamship Neptune, a screw-driven ship of 1,243 tons and 11 guns, was purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1863-64 and apparently placed under the command of Thomas Brown. In January, 1865, the Neptune left New York Harbor for City Point, Va., and thereafter operated between various ports in Virginia, the Carolinas, Florida and Louisiana through the end of the summer, transporting mules, ambulances and other equipment. At the war's end, the Neptune assisted in transporting troops and materiel back home and in carrying cotton from Louisiana.
The log of the Neptune is almost devoid of action, consisting of brief entries giving information on the location of the ship with even briefer commentary on its activities. It provides some information, however, on the supply side of the war and the activities of the Navy both in supplying soldiers in the Atlantic forts during the closing months of the war and in assisting in the return of troops home. Toward the end of the volume are a copy of the will of Capt. David Baxter (d. 1855) and a poem, "Main Street as it was."
