The University of Michigan Benjamin Stevens Letterbook |
Letterbook, 1781-1808
39 pp.
In 1781, Stevens served the Continental Army in Hartford, Connecticut as secretary (?) for Col. Charles Stewart, Commissary General of Issues. Stevens' letterbook contains requests to the state (Gov. Trumbull) for supplies and to merchants for salt, flour, meat, rum, soap and other goods and for means to transport and distribute these items. Salt seems to have been in short supply, but other goods seem occasionally to have been difficult to obtain, or were received in unacceptable condition. An eight line (incomplete) poem about an Irish girl follows the letters.
