385 items, including 17 photographs, 4 sketches, and 2 watercolors
Lars Sellstedt (1819-1911) began his adult life as a merchant seaman. However, he soon developed an interest in and an aptitude for painting, and, after settling in Buffalo, he began a second career as an artist. Sometimes called the 'Father of Art in Buffalo,' he founded the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, and he was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York City. This collection consists primarily of his correspondence with his family and of manuscript copies of his poetry. It also contains manuscript copies of two monographs, 'Architecture and Sculpture' and 'Art in Buffalo.' Poetry seemed to hold a great deal of interest for Sellstedt; however, his literary ability was quite limited, if the poems included in this collection are indicative of his work. The collection also contains letters from members of the Younglove family whose relation to the Sellstedts is not immediately apparent.
