Background note:
Correspondence of Lt. Clifford H. Scroggs, a native of Columbus, Ohio, with his mother at home, and his sister, Mrs. O.W. Boyd. In May, 1917, shortly after the United States entered the war, Scroggs volunteered for duty in the artillery service. After training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., Camp Sherman, Ohio and Camp Sheridan, Ala. before leaving for France in January, 1918. A Lieutenant in the 12th Field Artillery, Scroggs fought in several of the major American engagements of the summer of 1918, including the Chateau Thierry and the Argonne offensive, and after the Armistice, the regiment served with the occupation force in Germany for several months.
