Charles Clarence Pratt Papers

Temporary record

Pratt, Charles Clarence, 1854-1916

Papers, 1902-1909
2 letterboxes

Background note:
C.C. Pratt was functionary of the Pennsylvania Republican party at the turn of the twentieth century. His career included service as a staff member to Pennsylvania Governors Stone and Pennypacker (1899-1907), an unsuccessful run for the state senate (1902), and one term of service as a representative to the 61st Congress (1909-1911).

Scope and contents:

The C.C. Pratt Papers consists of two letterboxes of correspondence, apparently kept in Pratt's original alphabetical order. The first includes Pratt's incoming business correspondence from 1902. The bulk of the material relates to the Pennsylvania state elections that year, and specifically to Pratt's nomination and run for the state senate. This series includes letters from local- and county-level Republican organizations urging party unity, letters of congratulation and support for Pratt's nomination, and letters of condolence when he loses. While there is essentially no discussion of political issues, the correspondence provides a perspective on the workings of state-level politics in an election year.

The second box includes incoming correspondence from late 1908 and 1909, and includes a number of letters from congressmen and Pennsylvania political figures. Most of the correspondence consists of letters of congratulation on Pratt's election to the congress, with a few letters offering assistance to Pratt in establishing political relationships in Washington.
