The University of Michigan Pollard Family Papers |
Papers, 1844-1865
New Hampshire and Massachusetts, 334 items
Many members of the Pollard Family, originally from Derry, New Hampshire, migrated to Massachusetts in the middle of the 19th century. The two primary figures represented in the collection are Joseph Pollard and his brother Cyrus. Joseph was a teacher in New Hampshire, but was living in Massachusetts by 1864, the year he was elected to the School Board Committee in Woburn, Massachusetts. Cyrus Pollard was in charge of a wharf in Charleston, Massachusetts, and acted as general superintendent for George Henry's merchant trade. Their brother George Pollard was educated in New Hampton, New Hampshire, and their sister Emily Pollard attended school in Bradford, Massachusetts. Also represented in the collection is Asa D. Pollard, a currier who moved to Woburn, Massachusetts, by 1860.
The Pollard Papers consist of 334 items dated from 1841 to 1893, though the bulk falls between 1844 and 1865. The collection is made up of 228 letters and 106 items of a business and financial nature. The majority of the letters were written among the siblings Joseph, Emily, Cyrus, and George Pollard, and most were written by Joseph Pollard. There is a letter to Joseph with a lengthy description of a visit to a hydropathic facility in New York. There are also several letters from Asa D. Pollard and other friends and family members. The financial papers consist mostly of receipts and tax documents as well as household accounts. These documents relate almost entirely to Asa D. Pollard, although there are a small number that concern Joseph Pollard.
