Temporary record

Pierce, Frank
and
Pierce, Kate

Papers, 1859 February 7-1873
41 items, 3 photos

Background note:
Letters written to Kate Pierce by her brother Frank and male and female friends, during and after the Civil War. The collection include a number of soldiers' letters written in Virginia, and seeveral written from soldiers serving in Wyoming during the 1870's. Frank Pierce, the most frequent Civil War writer, is by no means the most literate or observant of writers, but he writes in a jesting, often crude manner that makes his letters interesting to read.

The post-war letters include eight from Ed Brady, a musician in the 13th U.S. Infantry, stationed at Fort Bridger, Wyoming. One notable item in the collection is a photograph taken of Brady from a Union Pacific Railroad photograph car by the photographer, J. B. Silvis, accompanied by a letter discussing the photo and the potential for war with the Mormons (1871 July 29).
