After serving as County Sheriff and in other public capacities for several years, John Magee was elected to Congress as a conservative Democrat from Steuben County, N.Y. After serving in Washington for two terms, 1827-1831, Magee declined renomination for a third, and further declined Andrew Jackson's offer of a cabinet post, in order to devote himself to his diverse business interests, including investment in banking, railroading, and mining.
Scope and contents:
The Magee Papers consists largely of letters and documents relating to John Magee's extensive business interests during the 1830s and 40s, but includes some items from his days as Sheriff and approximately 20-30 letters relating to his two terms as congressman.
