Papers, 1918 April-1918 December
Camp Pike, Little Rock, Ark., 24 items
A series of letters written from boot camp by Amis Madry, a young recruit from Brimingham, Ala. Madry was a Private, later Corporal (May, 1918) in Co. 18 of the 5th Training Battalion, and later a Sergeant in the 162nd Depot Brigade. Although he was an avid soldier who longed for advancement in the military, he was never able to find assignment to service in France. His military career was nevertheless quite successful, as he advanced rapidly through the ranks. Madry's letters suggest that he was somewhat better educated than his fellow recruits, and perhaps of a higher socio-economic origin. His opinion of African-Americans appears not to have been very favorable, however, with increasing contact with Blacks near Camp Pike, his opinion improved somewhat.
