The families of H. D. Brown and Ellen Kendall lived in New Lebanon, N.Y., and were prominent enough to afford tuition for some of the better boarding schools in New England. The children Henry Brown and Sarah and Ellen Kendall attended several schools, including Mount Hermon School, the Greylock Institute, the Madawannick Institute, and the Ingham Collegiate Institute during the 1850s and 60s.
Scope and contents:
The Kendall-Brown Family Papers includes 32 letters and documents, most of which were written by the children to their father while away at school. They provide some information of classes, perceptions of education, and (more indirectly) on family relations and expectations.
