1029 items; 2 maps; 6 photographs

Background note:
This collection includes the papers and correspondence of Daniel and Sally Hoit and their children, Julia Maria, Albert Gallatin, and William Henry Harrison. Daniel Hoit was a New Hampshire state legislator, probably a Democrat, with a strong sympathy for reformist movements, especially temperence and anti-slavery. Unfortunately, the majority of his letters in this collection do not deal extensively with politics; most of his correspondence is concerned with family matters. The letters of his children are also of interest, dealing with a wide range of subjects. Julia Maria married Enoch Piper Sherman who pursued a legal career in Ohio. Julia was a faithful and prolific correspondent with her parents and brothers, and her letters describe her daily life in great detail. Albert Gallatin was a portrait painter of modest reputation and renown. He spent most of his career in Boston, however he also worked for several years in Vermont, Maine and Canada. Like his father, his letters focus on family and personal matters rather than professional ones, although he does give some indication of the mundane, every-day concerns of artists. William Henry Harrison served as an Episcopal minister in Vermont for most of his adult life. After the death of his wife, Ann (who had borne his 11 children), Hoit turned away from the Episcopal church and converted to Catholicism. A few letters to his siblings reveal his enthusiasm for the Catholic Church, as he urges them to convert to the original church of Christ.
