Ohio
Pennsylvania, Bound diary and notebook
Hiester's diary records his travels through Ohio to St. Louis, then back to his home in eastern Pennsylvania. Most of the brief entries note the jobs he worked at in Ohio to earn money for his journey, his purchases, weather conditions, and means of travel. There is little in the way of observation or description. The diary is an excellent example of the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) dialect in written form.
