Hicks, Charles

Letterbooks, 1738-1828
2 Letterbooks, 258 pp. and 148 pp.

Background note:
These letterbooks of an American merchant from St. Augustine, Fla., contain approximately 60 letters and notes in English and approximately 90 pages written in Spanish, all dated between 1743 and 1750. The English language materials deal primarily with trade conditions in Florida and Cuba, especially Havana. They include some references to the political relations between Spain, the United States, and England. And they discuss the slave trade and Spanish military and naval activities. At the beginning and end of each book are notes written in a different hand regarding Hicks family matters in the years between 1816 and 1828. Interspersed throughout both books are accounts, logs and other records written in English and Spanish.
