In 1858-59, Irving Grinnell was a young man taking a grand tour of Europe with his parents, Moses H. and Julia (Irving), and his sisters, Julia and Fannie. Moses Grinnell was a partner in the shipping firm of Grinnell, Mintern, & Co., whose ships included the famous Flying Cloud, and from this source, the Grinnells were affluent, even by New York standards

This small collection of letters written to Irving Grinnell by family and friends (including 43 letters from Philip Schuyler, Jr.) while Grinnell was traveling in Europe contain abundant information on the social life and attitudes of privileged young men and women in late antebellum New York City.
