The University of Michigan Garesché Family Memory album |
Memory album, 1827-1832 December 12
Philadelphia, Pa., 242 pp.
DuPont F. and Anna L. Garesché were probably the children of Philadelphia merchant, Gabriel Garesché, and were tied by blood and marriage into the Franco-American mercantile elite.
Scope and contents:
A fine example of the genre, the Garesché memory album contains verse and illustrations addressed to DuPont F. and Anna L. Garesché of Philadelphia. Intended to inspire pleasant memories and deep reflections, the quips and quotations are drawn largely from popular writers influenced by romanticism. The entries are often of a stereotypical quality, but are enlivened by some well executed pencil and pen and ink sketches, including two very effective trompe l'oeuil drawings. Among the more unusual entries are two concrete poems in French, both contributed by Phillipe Bréda: "Buvons, amis"... (in the shape of a glass) and "Bouteille."
