Wilbraham, Mass., 24 items
The Methodist Rev. Wilbur Fisk (See Sprague's Annals of the Pulpit 7: 576-587) became the first principal of the Wesleyan Academy in Wilbraham, Mass., which had been founded in 1825 to provide for the education of girls. An experienced revivalist, Fisk oversaw a notable wave of enthusiasm that swept through the school in 1826, but remained at the Academy only until 1830, when he was chosen to become the first President of Wesleyan University.
Scope and contents:
This small collection consists of 24 letters written to Fiske in his capacity as principal of the Wilbraham Academy during a concentrated period in 1828-29. Many of the letters are from parents, entrusting their children to the care of the school, often specifying what was expected of the education. At least two letters relate to the mineralogical collections at the Academy.
