Helen Covington Barnard was born in Still Pond, Md., in 1898, the only child of dentist, William E. Barnard and his wife, Ethel Covington. Helen entered Wellesley College in 1916, not long after her father had relocated his practice to New York City, and graduated four years later as president of her senior class. During a vacation to the west, Helen met and married Robert S. Cox (1890-1971; M.I.T., 1912) in 1924, and moved to Wyoming, where the couple ran a dude ranch until their retirement in 1965. The Coxes lived in Saratoga and Carmel, Calif., until their respective deaths.
Scope and contents:
The Cox Papers includes nearly a complete run of Helen Barnard's letters home from Wellesley College, 1916-1920. Among other topics, Helen's letters include discussions of student life, academics, instructors and her outside interests. There are occasional comments on the war effort, suffrage, and women's issues.The Photographs Division includes three photograph albums of Helen Cox, plus numerous miscellaneous photographs relating to the Cox, Barnard, and Covington families.
