The University of Michigan Clarke Family Papers |
Papers, 1828-1928
904 items
The Clarke Papers revolve around the correspondence of Anna Maria Greeley Clarke, her husband, William C. Clarke, and their children, Stephen G., Anna, and Julia C. Other correspondents include William's siblings, Sarah, Greenleaf, John B., Francis and Moses. The most interesting elements in the collection are the papers of Stephen and Julia. Julia was a teacher and school administrator in New England, spending most of her career working for the Chauncey-Hall School in Boston. She was the most prolific writer in the family, and the majority of her correspondence concerns educational subjects and family matters. Stephen Clarke was a lawyer in New York, a member of the firm of Stanley, Clarke and Smith. He also served as president of the American Machine Gun Company. His correspondence also combines discussions of professional and family matters. In addition to his letters, Stephen left a rather large number of manuscripts, most written during his student days in the 1850s. He seems to have had no small interest in literature, trying his hand at poetry, essays and playwriting.
