10 items
A native of Altoona, Pa., Frank S. Buchanan enlisted in the Marine Corps in April, 1918, and was sent to training camp at Parris Island, S.C. By July, he was posted in Massachusetts, eventually at the Navy Yard in Boston. He was demobilized in the spring on 1919, never having seen overseas service. All nine letters in the Buchanan Papers were written by Frank Buchanan to his fiancee, Josephine Aurandt, while a private in the Marine Corps. Buchanan's letters are brief, but provide an impression of life in training camp and the duties and frustrations of a Marine assigned to a stateside billet during the waning days of the First World War.
