Background note:
Mary Perrin May Bradlee lived with her husband James Bowdoin Bradlee (1813-1872), and their children, at 34 Beacon Street in Boston. James operated Josiah Bradlee & Company, a leading mercantile house located at 46 Central Wharf. Their children included Mary May, born 1840, Sally Fletcher, born 1842, Katie May, born 1844, Alice Bowdoin, born 1846, and probably another daughter, Fanny, and a baby boy.



Scope and contents:

In her brief daily entries, Mary Bradlee documented the weather, clothing and the activities of her family. Included with the volume are several enclosures, including a letter to Mrs. Warren declining an invitation and a letter from C. B. Upham requesting that Fanny be allowed to come and visit. There are also accounts of charges made at Warren's for foodstuffs and sewing materials, a list of sick nurses in Boston, a piece of verse, a newspaper clipping about the record cold on February 8, 1861, and a piece of birch bark.
