James A. Whipple, a native of Boston, was apprenticed to a steam engine manusfacturer and became a skilled machinist and engineer. He studied submarine diving and pursued a career as a 'salvor,' recovering sunken property along the Atlantic coast and in Caribbean and Mediterranean waters. Whipple was a talented inventor. He made substantial improvements in submarine armor and diving apparatus, particularly with his development of a trumpet used to communicate between a diver and an assistant above water.
