Biographical information:

George Thompson, a Virginia colonel in the Revolutionary War, settled in kentucky in 1792. He developed a 2,000-acre estate, 'Shawnee Springs,' a few miles north of Herodsburg. His son, George C. Thompson, became speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1821.


Scope and Contents:

Papers of George Thompson, Revolutionary War officer, Kentucky pioneer, and his son George Claiborne Thompson, Kentucky legislator.

This collection contains eight letters to George Thompson from Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), first governor of Kentucky, discussing politics and land holdings in the new state. Five letters by George C. Thompson to his father concern the Kentucky Mounted Volunteers' expedition against the Indians of Illinois in 1812. Other correspondence of George C. Thompson relates to Kentucky politics in the 1820s.
