| William L. Clements Library The University of Michigan John K. Stickney Papers |
In 1851, Capt. John K. Stickney was hired by Theodore Chase, a wealthy Boston merchant, to sail a two-masted ship, the Bowditch, to Calcutta. Leaving Boston in January, 1852, the Bowditch carried a cargo of ice and reached Calcutta in 128 days. After a long delay caused by flooding of the Hoogly River, the ship made its return voyage.
Papers of Capt. John K. Stickney, recording a commercial voyage from Boston to Calcutta.
The collection includes correspondence, bills, and receipts, fully documenting the cargo, ship's repairs, and labor for the trip.
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Fenton Davison, 1979
The lap desk formerly kept in the Manuscript Division originally contained the Stickney Papers. The Davisons bought the desk in about 1949 in an antique shop, refurbished it, and gave both the desk and papers to the Clement.
