Biographical information:

Henry Stevens, a native of Vermont, graduated from Yale. In 1845 he went to London 'on an antiquarian and book-hunting expedition' and remained there until his death. As a dealer, he sold many books to the British Museum and helped build up the libraries of several great American collectors. His book business continues today under the name of Henry Stevens, Son, and Stiles.

Papers of Henry Stevens, London book dealer.

This collection, which came from the firm's files, relates primarily to the activities of Henry Stevens, although it contains some correspondence concerning the firm's dealings after his death. The papers include letterpress copybooks containing 2,500 letters as well as a group of 145 miscellaneous letters sent by collectors to Stevens during the years he was in business.
