Shadwell was private secretary to Thomas Robinson, 2nd baron Grantham, while Robinson was ambassador to Spain. In 1773 Shadwell began corresponding with John Marsh, the British consul at Malaga; he continued writing until his return to England in the spring of 1778. Shadwell later went to India and died there.
