Scope and Contents:
The Schoff Revolutionary War Collection, compiled by James S. Schoff of New York, is an extraordinary group of letters relating to the struggle for American independence. All have substantial research value. In addition to the Goore Letterbook, the Nathaniel Freeman Papers, and the Jonathan Chase Papers, which are described in separate entries, this collection contains the following:
- George Washington letters; 25 letters written by Washington, 1775-1799.
- Letters by British and American military leaders, most of them written during the war; 32 items, 1766-1790. Correspondents include Philip Van Cortlandt, Israel Putnam, William Alexander (Lord Stirling), Thomas Gage, Charles Lee, Caesar Rodney, and Benedict Arnold.
- Benjamin West (1746-1817), New Hampshire lawyer, six letters written to his brother, the Reverend Samuel West, describing his journey from Worcester, Massachusetts, to Charleston, S.C., 1778-1779.
- A handsomely bound volume of letters, autographed documents, and portraits of Washington and 25 of the generals who served under him in the Revolutionary War.
