Biographical information:

Asher Robbins was born in Wetherfield, Conn., and graduated from Yale College in 1782. He was admitted to the bar in 1792, practiced law in Providence, and moved to Newport three years later. He became United States district attorney and sat in the state assembly from 1818 to 1825. Robbins was a Whig senator from Rhode Island, 1827-1833 and 1835-1839.

Letters of Asher Robbins, lawyer, United States senator from Rhode Island.

This collection contains mainly letters by Robbins to Benjamin Bourn (1755-1808), United States congressman from Rhode Island. They are concentrated in the period 1794-1796 and deal with the correspondents' mutual interests in land and currency speculation and legislation beneficial to them. A series of letters written in 1800 concerns Robbins' lobbying efforts in Washington to effect changes in congressional districting.
