Alexander Phoenix (1778-1863) was born in Morristown, N.J., studied law at Columbia University, and graduated in 1794. He practiced law briefly before joining his father's mercantile firm, Phoenix, Ingraham, & Nixon. When the firm declared bankruptcy in 1811, Alexander and another partner were sent to debtor's prison for two years. Phoenix began to study theology and ihn 1824 was ordained a Congregational minister and installed in the church at Chicopee, Mass. He remained there 11 years, then moved to a pastorate in New Haven, Conn., and eventually retired in Harlem, N.Y.

This collection contains letters, acounts, deeds, wills, and other documents relating to the bankruptcy proceedings against Phoenix's business firm, negotiations for the partner's release from prison, and the settlement of his father's estate. There are 23 letters relating to the families of Alexander Phoenix and Nathaniel G. Ingraham, including 11 letters from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Elizabeth Phoenix, 1826-1833.
