Biographical information:

Correspondence of the William Palgrave family of Cotishall, Norfolk, England.

Scope and Contents:

This collection contains letters written by William Palgrave to his sons, William Palgrave, Jr., collector of customs at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and Robert Palgrave (d. c.1805), registrar of the vice admiralty court at Gibraltar. The elder Palgrave discusses family matters and comments on local politics. Letters to him also detail a request for bail money to free an accused abortionist, Dr. James Robertson, as well as information regarding Robertson's capture in Holland and subsequent trial. Correspondence addressed to William, Jr., includes letters from Charles Townshend (1728-1810), member of Parliament for Great Yarmouth, concerning local patronage and the election of 1784. Other letters, directed to Robert Palgrave, deal with a dispute over fees accompanying his office in Gibraltar. The collection also includes letters of condolence to the family when Robert dies from disease in 1805. Other items of note include extracts from the will of one Dr. Parr, who leaves rings and money to various members of the Palgrave family, and personal letters between family members regarding health and well-being, births, deaths, and other events of everyday life.
