Scope and Contents:

Papers of the Neil family, merchants and shippers of Portsmouth, N.H.

This collection contains miscellaneous letters, business accounts, and bills of lading relating to the merchandising activities of the Neil family of Portsmouth. It includes correspondence between William Neil and merchant George Andrews of Dover, N.H. There are letters concerning a settlement for losses suffered by the Neils when the schooner John was captured by the British in 1815. Restitution was made by the British government in 1855. An account of the ship Judah Touro, sailing from Boston to Portsmouth in January and February, 1861, 30 pp., is also included.
