| William L. Clements Library The University of Michigan Clements R. Markham Papers |
Markham spent several years in the navy and traveled in South America before he entered the civil service, working in the India Office. In 1860 he collected cinchona trees and seeds from Peru and planted them in India. From 1867 to 1877 he was in charge of geographical work in the India Office. He accompanied Napier on the Abyssinian expedition and helped stimulate the revival of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Markham retired from public life in 1877 and devoted himself to geographical and historical interests.
