Scope and Contents:

Documents issued from or received at British headquarters in America, 1772-1783, by Frederick Mackenzie, deputy adjutant general under Sir Henry Clinton and Sir Guy Carleton.

The collection contains approximately 500 items, including proclamations and general orders involving signals, embarkations, transports, regulations, warrants, prisoners, courts martial, promotion, rank, volunteers, refugees, provincials, bounties, money, provisions, rations, barracks, hospitals, and other administrative matters. There are monthly strength reports for various commands and lists of dead, wounded and missing. The papers include six record books and one additional volume:

  1. 'Collection of Capitulations of Armies, Towns and Places taken in the course of the French and Indian Wars,' 112 pp.
  2. 'Record Book of the 23rd Regiment of Royal Fusiliers, 1755-1770,' 82 pp. and 'Orders given by Marshall Contades before the Battle of Minden,' 8 pp.
  3. Headquarters record book containing journal entries of orders, ordnance, rates, duties, reports, supplies, 1774-1782, 35 pp.
  4. Headquarters record book containing copies of proclamations, 1775-1778, by Gage, Howe, Arbuthnot, Clinton, Carleton, Cornwallis, and others, 141 pp; at end of volume are mackenzie's notes written in June, 1777, with five pen and ink sketches and battle plans, 15 pp.
  5. 'Extracts of general orders given by His Excellency General Sir Henry Clinton, 1778,' 80 extracts, 38 pp.
  6. 'Orders given by his Excellency General Guy Carleton...in 1782-1783,' 292 orders, 244 pp.
  7. 'Elements of Field Fortification, [after 1812], 311 pp. Mackenzie's translated copy of one of General Gaspard Noizet-Saint-Paul's published works on fortifications.
