| William L. Clements Library The University of Michigan John Louis Ligonier Letterbook |
Ligonier was a naturalized Huguenot refugee, professional soldier, and courtier. When the duke of Cumberland (nephew of George II and commander in chief) suffered military defeat and political disgrace in 1757, Ligonier at age 77 took administrative command of the army under William Pitt. Although respectd for his long and able service, Ligonier was little more than a tool of the dynamic war minister.
Official letterbook of John Louis Ligonier, field marshal, master general of the ordnance, commander in chief of the British army during the Seven Years War.
The letterbook contains copies of about 300 letters from Ligonier, 30 of them signed by his secretary Richard Cox, to a variety of officers and officials, mostly dealing with personnel and regimental matters.
