Biographical information:

Thomas Langstroth was a papermaker, gristmill operator, and estate administrator in Trenton, N.J., from 1803 until 1838. He then purchased a farm in Bucks County, pa., and finally settled on land in Montgomery County. He married twice, first to Mary Lupp, then to Hannah E. Boureau. He had eight children.

Catharine Langstroth, who married T. Chisman, established the Mount Holly Institute for Young Ladies in the 1840s and later operated the West Philadelphia Female Seminary. Her sister, Margaretta, after two harrowing years in the Friends' Asylum (1838-1839) taught music at the Mount Holly Institute and then spent fifteen years traveling while she supported herself in various teaching positions. After a few years in Pemberton, Va., Margaretta moved to Little Rock, Ark., where she was joine by her brother, Edward F. B. Langstroth, a physician. In 1859-60, Edward and Margaretta tutored the children of Gen. John Milton (1807-1865) in Marianna, La. Just before the Civil War broke out, Margaretta returned to Pennsylvania, where she taught Sunday Schol for Black children in the 1860s.

Edward remained in the south during the war, working as a physician at Confederate hospitals. He later worked as a teacher and law clerk in Richmond, Va., and Augusta, Ga. During the 1870s he practiced medicine in Vinton, Iowa, where he died in 1881.
