Scope and Contents:

Family correspondence between the children of John K. Kane (1795-1858), Philadelphia jurist.

The collection contains letters sent to Elizabeth Kane (1832-1869) from her brothers Thomas L. Kane (1822-1888), soldier and abolitionist, Robert P. Kane (1827-1906), lawyer, and John K. Kane (1833-1886), physician. There are references to the most famous member of the family, Elisha K. Kane (1820-1857), Arctic explorer.

The correspondence deals primarily with family matters, 1850-1860. John Kane's letter describe his medical studies in Paris and his service as a physician on General Grant's staff at Cairo, Mississippi, in 1862.
