| William L. Clements Library The University of Michigan Stephen Gore Papers |
Stephen Gore was a native of Boston who moved first to New Orleans and then to St. Louis in the late 1830's. He was a partner in the firm of Gore & Ridgeway, which traded with Boston merchants for coffee, candles, nails, and soap in return for tobacco and whiskey shipped from St. Louis.
Collection of business letters addressed to Stephen Gore, merchant in St. Louis, Mo.
This small group of letters includes comments on tariffs and other issues of national politics. There are interesting observations regarding the ill effects of the temperance crusade on profits in the liquor trade during the early 1840's.
