Scope and Contents:

Miscellaneous collection of manuscripts relating to the army of Great Britain, consisting of the following:

  1. Correspondence and records relating to the Quartermaster General's Office, 1772-1819, dealing chiefly with administrative matters including routes of march,barracks, fortifications, embarkations, recruitment of militia, 9 volumes.
  2. 'Establishment of His Majestys Forces and Garrisons Viz., In Great Britain, Minorca, Gibraltar and the Plantations for the Year 1737,' 76 pp. Report prepared by George Dodington and others for officials of the British Treasury giving financial information and 'offreckonings' of expenses for various army regiments. Statistical information is included for the Leeward Islands, Annapolis Royal, Canso, Placentia, New York, Jamaica, Bermuda, Providence, and Georgia.
  3. Army records, 1758-1824. A volume of miscellaneous subsistence and pay warrants and receipts, evidently collected for their autograph interest, signed by British officers serving in North America, 30 pp.
  4. Confidential army reports, 1770-1782, from the library of Frederick Lord North (1732-1792), British prime minister during the American Revolutionary War, 58 volumes. Strength reports for the British army in America, including auxiliaries, and records of the number of troops being raised in England for service in America.
