Biographical information:

Born in Louisville, Ky., George Croghan gained national acclaim at the age of 21 through his successful defence of Fort Stephenson in northeastern Ohio, repelling a large British force under General Proctor. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in the Mexican War, Croghan spent his later years in New Orleans, where he was postmaster.


Scope and Contents:

Family and business papers of George Croghan, Army officer, War of 1812 hero.

This collection contains 27 letters written by George to his brother John Croghan, 1814-1847. Other manuscripts relate to Croghan family land purchases in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. With the papers are 19 plat maps of landholdings in Kentucky and Indiana.
