Biographical information:

In 1803, at the age of 16, William Bell enrolled as a cadet in the Royal Artillery. He saw duty in the Napoleonic Wars in the West Indies, the Peninsular Campaign, and at Waterloo. Bell had a distinguished career, rising from a Captain in the Royal Artillery in 1830 to Colonel in 1852 and Lieutenant General in 1866. He was knighted in 1867.

Journal of Sir William Bell, British army officer

The journal contains Bell's notes on Barbados and Gibraltar, with observations on slavery in the West Indies. Added to the journal are Spanish language exercises and extracts from Gil Blas.
