The Clements Library houses one of the nation's great collections for the study of the history of the Americas beginning in the 15th century. The collections represent the early recorded history of the United States, Canada, the West Indies, and Latin America. Particular strengths include the early exploration and settlement of North America, the period of the American Revolution, the American Civil War, and the social and cultural histories of the 19th century. The Library is open to all serious researchers. There are no fees for use of material and no institutional affiliation is required. All library regulations must be observed.Full information on policies for use may be found on the Library's page listing regulations.
Is funding available for visiting researchers?
The Clements Library administers the Jacob Price Research Fellowship, which provides a limited number of research grants for younger scholars to use the Clements' collections.
The Library is open 9am-11:45 am and 1pm-4:45pm, Monday through Friday throughout the year, except for national holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year.
Are photocopying, microfilming, or photography of original materials permitted?
Where possible and appropriate, the Clements Library will provide copies of materials.Full details on the Library's reproduction policies and fees are available.

Where can I stay while working at the Clements?
Although Ann Arbor is an expensive city, there are some affordable options. The web pages for the City of Ann Arbor include several options, including motels and bed and breakfast places. The web site also contains a brief list of available lodging, derived from the City web site, though the list is not comprehensive, and does not indicate any endorsement on our part.
How can I help support the Clements Library?
The Clements has enjoyed a long tradition of support from its researchers and other supporters. The Clements Library Associates is a friends' group that for half a century has provided generous support for acquisitions at the Clements. All contributions to the Library are tax deductible and help the Library to maintain its active program in supporting research in American history.The Library also offers for sale a variety of publications, for which Clements Library Associates receive special discounts.
