Photographs of Barnum's Nightingale, Saturday, December 10, 2005 performance.
Barnum's Nightingale, an original musical written by Joan Morris, directed by Joan Morris with Robin Wilson, will be performed in the Great Hall of the William L. Clements Library on December 8, 9, 10 of 2005.
This musical fable is about the 19th century musical icon Jenny Lind and her fabulously successful 1850 tour of America, under the management of P. T. Barnum. Barnum's Nightingale will be told as a fairy tale by author Hans Christian Andersen, who was also a suitor of Miss Lind. It will recreate the discordant relationship between the cultured European vocalist Miss Lind, and the irrepressible promoter, P. T. Barnum. The purity of Lind's character, along with her generosity and philanthropic zeal, led Barnum to correctly ascertain that she would be fascinating to American audiences. Because of his flamboyant publicity program, some of which was shocking to the demure, dignified Miss Lind, an enormous fortune was made.
Starring in Barnum's Nightingale will be Carmen Pelton as Jenny Lind, Malcolm Tulip as P. T. Barnum and Hans Christian Andersen, Joan Morris as her cousin and companion Josephine Ahmansson, Louis Nagel as accompanist/husband Otto Goldschmidt, Greg Pearl as Lind's singing companion Giovanni Belletti, and David Gilliland as her musical director, Jules Benedict. Musical direction of Barnum's Nightingale will be by David Gilliland.
The Orchestra will feature Nathan Jasinski on cello, Bethany Mennemeyer on violin, Beth Kirton on violin, Ashley Opie on viola, and Brad Phillips on Banjo, Mandolin, and Guitar. Choreography will be by Robin Wilson.
The same production team that brought you the Police Gazette will be in charge of Barnum's Nightingale: Gary Decker, lighting, Jessica Hahn, costume design, and Vince Mountain set design. Katie McKee will be Stage Manager.
Show times on Thursday and Friday are 8:00 pm, with the Saturday afternoon matinee at 2:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Clements Library by calling 734-764-2347, or at the door at the time of the event.
