From the time of the opening of the Library in 1923 to the present day, the saving of our precious historical heritage at the Clements Library has been a "work in progress" of transcendent importance. This purpose has been handed down from the original collector William L. Clements, to the Directors of the Clements Library. The third of the Clements Library's Directors is about to retire after thirty-six years of total service to this mission. It seems an appropriate time to glance backwards to get some sense of how the Library developed into the important historical and educational resource that it now is.
This exhibit
features the materials that were the milestone acquisitions in the building
of the Clements Library collections, from the first major purchases by William
L. Clements, to the recent additions by Director John C. Dann. Included are
rare and historically important books, manuscript documents, maps, engravings,
photographs, and paintings. The Clements Library is located at 909 South University
Avenue, and is open Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 4:45 p.m. For further
information please call 734-764-2347.
